China’s National Energy Administration Outlines Three Measures to Strengthen Domestic Oil and Gas Supply
The National Energy Administration recently announced three priority measures to further strengthen China’s domestic oil and gas supply capacity: developing strategic production bases, advancing key technologies, and accelerating the industry’s green and low-carbon transition.
First, China will accelerate the development of strategic oil and gas supply bases. Greater efforts will be made to evaluate, explore and develop resources in major basins, including the Ordos, Sichuan, Bohai Bay and Tarim basins, while supporting concentrated exploration and large-scale production capacity development in key areas.
Second, the industry will strengthen research into fundamental theories, core technologies and major equipment. Priority areas include deep onshore resources, deepwater offshore resources, shale oil and gas, and enhanced recovery from mature fields. The integration of artificial intelligence with oil and gas exploration and development will also be promoted to support intelligent exploration and smart oilfield development.
Third, oil and gas exploration and production will continue to move toward greener and lower-carbon operations. This will include greater use of clean energy, closer integration between conventional oil and gas operations and renewable energy, and further development of carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies. The industry will also explore replicable technical solutions, standards and operating models.
These measures are expected to create further demand for oil and gas exploration, engineering construction, technical services, intelligent upgrading and project management, while generating new opportunities for energy engineering service providers.
